Cirillo Single Vineyard Mataro 2021
The Collective Review
Mataro is an unusual powerplay as a straight variety. It’s normally blended into red blends and is the M in GSM. Mataro as a standalone is a fascinating and savoury red that is always a talking point. This single vineyard red was made on the property and shows structure and flavour. Only 60 dozen are made a year so it’s as rare as hen’s teeth.
The only wine at this address that goes solely into two hogsheads. Merely because there is so little of it! Deep, dark and resinous, with a ferruginous burr manifest as something sooty, molten, meaty and carnal. Irrefutably full-weighted, yet nothing jammy. But the overall impression is one of impeccable ripeness, vibrancy and relatively smooth contours for the variety, with a gentle rasp of oak tannin at the back end. Drink or hold. Read more

Tasting Notes
The Cirillo Mataro is an ode to Barossa history and old clones of the region. Cuttings were taken from nine individual rouge Mataro vines amongst our 1850 Grenache vineyard. Marco Cirillo propagated these nine vines in a nursery at the winery. Then he replanted these in 2005, as bush vineyard (no trellising) on the Cirillo property. As it is a small block, it only equates to around 60 dozen made each year. This wine is generous and silky with beautiful depth. It shows structured flavour with fine tannins. Made naturally in open fermenters, gently basket pressed, then left to mature in seasoned French oak barrels for 12 months. This allows the Mataro to show its true terroir. A wine that can be forgotten in the cellar for the next 10 to 20 years.
