The grapes for this Coonawarra Shiraz are from the northern, slightly warmer, part of the region, mostly from Tim Kidmans block. The thinking is that the warmer part of Coonawarra is better suited to this variety and remember, it was Shiraz which first made the region famous. Cabernet is simply a Johnny-come-lately. Fermentation was in a mix of closed and open receptacles. The blend then went to a mix of older French barriques and hogsheads for 14 months. A vibrant red, the aromas move through floral notes, aniseed, bergamot, blackfruits and roast meats, providing a most attractive impression. This is a simple style, full of flavour that ffinishes with silky tannins and decent length. Good value and should be at its peak over the next three to four years.

It's all mid-palate but it's a good mid-palate. Plums, strawberries and red cherries combine with sweet, roasted, woodsy spice notes. Refreshing acidity is a key player, as is the nutshell dryness of the finish. It would work best alongside food.
