The Collective Review

Ata Rangi Pinot Noir needs little introduction. The icon of NZ Pinot, and one of the finest renditions of the variety in the southern hemisphere, this beautiful 2020 release - the winery of James Suckling’s NZ Wine of the Year - is a stark reminder that you should skip the Burgundy and buy this instead.

'The long-serving, dedicated team behind Ata Rangi just go from strength to strength. Their Pinots have always been great and yet, even in a world where the Pinot benchmark gets higher very year, Ata Rangi is better than ever.'

Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, The Wine Advocate

They're lofty words from one of the globe's most influential wine critics. But it's hard to disagree - Ata Rangi Pinot Noir is right up there amongst the world's best wines, and this 2020 is another impossibly fine wine. Exhibit a, b and c - the glowing reviews:

' Accessible now but with a proven history of ageing gracefully. Elegant wine with impressive power.'

Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous

The 2020 Pinot Noir reminds me of walking into a cathedral - that quiet, cool hush that falls as you walk through its doors. This is harmonious, supple, unshowy and unforced. Hailing from old vines and delicately textured despite the abundance of fruit concentration. Refined tannins with the finest of gravelly textures, akin to licking a stone. Scented yet restrained, with a fragrance of sweet red fruit, tea leaf and cedar spices with persistent acidity that carries it. Very complete and already approachable.

Mike Bennie - The Wine Front

Most of the fruit comes off free-draining Terrace soils and older vine sites. Oldest vine age core, let’s say. This wine is 40% whole bunch. Bold, full and concentrated style, albeit finds structure and levity from frisky acidity and fine, lacy tannin profile. Richness and density in perfume from hello. Dark cherry, mocha notes, liquorice, sweet tobacco and white pepper. Palate and bouquet in synch on characters. Feels fine, trim, a little tough but pulled very long. Great expression.

Winemakers Note

Looking back at the seasonal notes of the 2020 vintage the repeating theme is `typical’. Temperature, rainfall and yields were all we could hope for in an ideal season in Martinborough.

It was a pleasure to harvest clean, impeccable fruit that had a clear, calm voice of the region and vintage.

Made from only our oldest pinot noir plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, this wine is the best of six small vineyards all within 500 m of our winery.

The result is a complex, elegant wine, beautifully perfumed in the classic Ata Rangi style.

40% whole bunch with the remainder destemmed, fermentation by indigenous yeasts. Total tank time 15- 23 days.

After pressing, complete malolactic ferment in oak. 11 months total in French oak (35% new), then blended and held for further 8 months prior to bottling.
