Monica Larner - Wine Advocate

The organic 2017 Caiarossa (made with Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Syrah and Alicante) displays bright and focused fruit, framed by an elegant mineral note of crushed limestone. The fruit is presented as dark cherry and sweet blackberry, but the wine also shows savory tones of tobacco and cured leather. However, those candied cherry and raspberry notes emerge with distinction and underline the heat of the vintage. The tannins are a bit dusty and bitter.

Jane Anson - Decanter

This has sharp pepper and spice overtones with full blasts of sage, toast and cinnamon. 2017 was one of the hottest recorded vintages in Tuscany, and while the alcohol is well balanced in the overall structure, you feel the warmth of the tear through the exuberant and exotic fig and raspberry puree fruit. Rich, powerful and concentrated, some dryness to the tannins on the finish but overall this is seductive and well balanced. Tuscan estate located in the Maremma and owned by the Albada family of Château Giscours. Blend completed by 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Alicante (Mourvedre), 3% Sangiovese, 5% Petit Verdot. Farmed biodynamically. Drinking Window 2022 - 2040

A fresh, chewy red with brightness and coolness for this ripe vintage. Medium body. Pretty fruit. Dark-berry, wet-earth and mushroom flavors. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drinkable now, but better in 2022 and onwards.

Winemakers Note

ORGANIC CERTIFIED (Ecocert & Demeter) Caiarossa is a patchwork oh hills, soils, terroirs and varieties. The first vineyards, that strech over 16 hectares were planted in 1998 after a careful analysis of te soil. The result of the many driling tests revealed the heterogenous nature of the land, mainly clay with limestone at lower altitudes (150-200 meters)  and sedimentary rocks mixed with iron-rich sand at higher elevations. 27 different terroirs were identified, and each one of these was allocated to the variety that could interpret it at best. Another 15 hectares of vineyards divided into 20 percels were planted between 2012 and 2013 a few kilometers from the winery, in an area characterized by a soli rich with clay and southern sun exposure. The result is a mosaic of 31 hectares divided in 47 parcels and 10 different varieties.  Cabernet Franc, planted over more than 7 hectares of land, plays the leading role. Then, ther are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,  Syrah, Sangiovese, petit Verdot and Alicante for red grapes. A sunny vintage This was one of the hottest years ever. Winter recorded temperature over 3-4 degrees higher than usual and rains under the average. Because of these particular conditions, vines budded 2 weeks in advance. Temperatures above average continued throughout the month of March when a unusual sharp blow of cold happened at the end of April. Thanks to the mitigating effects of the sea, temperatures remained above zero along the coast, preventing damages to the young buds. In May was hot and dry as usual and flowering happened under good conditions. Summer was really hot and we recorded no rains during these 3 months. This very warm climate was however balanced by quite cool nights and this has sped up the maturation of the grapes, making this harvest one of the most precocious ever, with the first Merlot harvested on August the 17th and the last grapes brought in to the cellar on September the 20th.
