2016 Mystery Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon Deal No. 11

The Collective Review

How can we get such a good Cabernet from Coonawarra? It is a mystery, but you are the winner. It's a big customer favourite and a big red with even bigger savings. It's in a beautiful big bottle, too, sealed with wax, befitting the luscious and powerful Coonawarra Cab inside.

This is impressively composed and styled, showing cassis, cigar, cedar and warm spice aromas on the nose. The palate offers terrific weight and depth, combined with refined texture and chalky tannins, making it both sturdy and velvety. Wonderfully flavoursome and hugely appealing. At its best: now to 2033. Read more

Vines for this bottling are 30 years old, from erra Rossa soils and destemmed berries. Matured in a mix of French and American barrels and hogsheads for 18 months with further maturation in bottle. Bilberry, blackcurrants and just picked boysenberry. Fresh potting soil, cassia bark and crushed granite. Clove, mace, and allspice. Pencil box and cigar clippings. A muscular wine with good layers of spice and a nice dry finish to the tannins. Still plenty of youth and vibrancy in a tightly coiled package. Drink now and it has the ability of another few years of cellaring too. A good old scotch fillet and peppercorn sauce would be a treat alongside it.

Tasting Notes

This Cabernet Sauvignon embodies a fruit-driven wine with rich notes of blackcurrant, plum, and Morello cherry. Touches of oak, chocolate, and vanilla bean complete the rich round palate.
