91–93. Barrel Sample. This wine has the dusty tannins that are typical of the vintage. Ripe red plums and berries are combined with refreshing acidity on the palate, and lead to a structured and dense finish.
This is a spicy, rich, more traditional St Julien compared to the 2015, or especially the 2016. It's totally charming and pretty much ready to go. It starts extremely well with crisply defined cassis and blackberry, softening a touch through the finish.
Lots of blackberry, nut and chocolate character. Some wet earth, too. Medium to full body, velvety tannins and a light, herbal finish. Drink in 2018.
