Firm tannins are holding everything in place right now. There's a tiny dip through the mid-palate before the fruit rushes back in to catch you. Redcurrant and cassis bud notes suggest that we aren't in over-ripe territory here, but it feels confident enough. It demonstrates how second wines can struggle in certain vintages, such as 2012, as they are sacrificed to maintain the quality of the grand vin - and this is even true with Baron de Brane, one of the best second wines on display.

The 2012 Baron de Brane has an expressive bouquet that is equally divided between red and black fruit, all well defined; hints of dark chocolate and leather develop in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin; not overtly complex, but there is satisfying depth and grip toward the slightly meaty finish. Drink this now and over the next four to five years. Clean fruit character with lemon rind and mineral undertones. Medium body with fresh acidity and a medium tannin finish. Very good.
