Winemakers Note

Château Lassègue : Ornate sundials adorn the façade of Château Lassègue, a beautiful 18th century Château. This symbol of perfect sun exposure is the inspiration for our logo and represents the message of our wines. Lassègue is Saint-Émilion at its most opulent. Old vines grow on the south/southwest hills which are the prolongation of the Côte de Saint-Émilion, and whose soils of clay and limestone add exquisite minerality to their fruit. Rich, aromatic Cabernet Franc married to the dense concentration of old vine Merlot and seasoned with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon, results in a wine that is at once powerful and elegant. 2021 VINTAGE NOTES The 2021 vintage might sometimes be referred to as a ‘vigneron’s vintage’ but leaving aside the fastidious work in the vines that was essential during the entire growing season, it was actually the characteristics of the soils and topography of the estate that allowed Lassègue to prevail. We would call 2021 a ‘terroir vintage’ or even a ‘cru vintage’. Because first there was the frost. A hard frost in April affected the entirety of the Bordeaux wine-growing region to different degrees. While our parcels on the foothills were affected, the majority of our vineyards were able to resist the cold snap. The natural attributes of Lassègue’s parcels higher on the slopes were able to save the vintage. It’s always in difficult vintages that great terroirs make the difference and impose their signature, and we felt privileged as vignerons to be in this fortunate position. After the episode of frost, it was our duty to be laser-focused on the vines during the cool and humid summer. In this exceptionally difficult context, the coordination of our team and the resources put into action were decisive to protect the canopy and thus reach the best possible ripeness. The conditions turned favorable in late summer, and we were rewarded by our efforts by the very good condition of the grapes and phenolic ripeness leading up to harvest, which took place between September 29th and October 14th.
