Toni Paterson - Halliday's Wine Companion

This iconic semillon is made from block LO-07 of the Lovedale Vineyard, planted on a sandy, ancient seabed in '46 by Maurice O'Shea. Like all 2018s, the wine is boldly flavoured and generous in proportion, with a pillowy mid-palate bursting with fresh pear, lime curd and a touch of smoked almond. As the wine will only expand with time, I would enjoy it now with its lovely mix of richness and freshness.

Considered by many to be the finest expression of straight semillon, be it here or anywhere else. Scents of lanolin, lemon drop, wild fennel and a hint of something soapy and broad, verging on buttered toast. A softer vintage befitting earlier drinking perhaps, but still a magnificent featherweight, destined for a life of 10 to 12 years. Transparent, highly regional and thoroughly convincing. An inimitable wine of terroir. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Straw-like and dried-floral aromas, a hint of pot-pourri. The wine is soft and gentle, rounded and rich, with a big middle-palate. It's straightforward and generous, dry and lingering, if a little surprising price-wise.
