2016 Peter Lehmann Wigan Riesling
2002 vines. Wigan is king of Eden Valley riesling and yet again one of the top releases of the year. Still a magnificent straw-green at just 5yo, it's at that magic moment where primary and secondary characters unite in equal measure. All the fresh lime and Granny Smith apple of youth, backed by rising buttery, spicy, roast almond maturity. Brilliant acid line charges an astonishing finish that lasts for 30 seconds. Yes, I timed it! For all it represents, this might just be the bargain of the year. Read more

This has an intense nose of grapefruit, slate, green apples, white lavender and crushed stones. Mouthwateringly fresh with excellent concentration and power, from citrus to hints of dried lime and flowers, evolving to some petrol. Long, mineral finish. Drink now or hold. Screw cap.
I wonder if there are any statistics out there on the number of wine producers that still put gold medal/stickers on their labels to display wine show and critic prowess? I like to wander all sorts of booze shops and my straw poll would suggest way less, or, wine ranges have diversified enough to lesser known/boutique or buyer own brand labels that don’t enter shows and hence it seems diminished. Anyway, this Wigan has three shiny round gold things on it. It’s mellow and yet brittle, a balancing act of maturity and the freshness of the young wine. Nervy, saline acidity meets honeycomb crunch and a sluice of sticky liquid from preserved lemon. It’s attractive in perfume, set in the vein of benign decay of riesling in dried citrus peel, honey, toast, faint kero. It’s in a lovely spot, a little pudgy perhaps, missing a touch of crackle and snap but with a good chill the tension should rise and it’s a fine drink in that regard.
With five years of age on release, this wine is still very youthful; a lifted river-pebble-minerality, delicate lime curd and toasted sourdough. In the mouth it is silky with intensely concentrated flavours and pure crisp acidity. There’s an intriguing, rich, almost oily character with a crunchy, stony minerality that pulls all the elements together. Drink with crispy roast pork, for a beautiful interplay of flavours and textures.

Tasting Notes
The Masters wines are named after a person whom, or event that, has played an intrinsic role in the Peter Lehmann story. Crafted from the classic Barossa varietals, the wines are released with 5 years of bottle age and will continue to age gracefully for many years. Andrew Wigan was mentored by Peter Lehmann and was at his side when the winery was founded in 1979. He was Chief Winemaker from 1980 - 2014. Peter Lehmann’s reputation for Barossa Shiraz was soon complemented by Andrew’s passion for white wines. His refinement of the whites was revolutionary and his contribution to the Peter Lehmann story was recognised in 2003 with the re-naming of the revered ‘Reserve’ Riesling as ‘Wigan’ Riesling. Brilliant pale green colour. Still in its infancy, this wine presents some toast characters amongst beautiful lime citrus and floral notes. Classic intense lime cordial flavours carry through resonant of an Eden Valley Riesling and complemented by lemon rind and crisp pure acidity.
