2005 Grand Mayne

6 x 750ml
The 2005 Grand Mayne has a broody bouquet, quite closed compared to the 2004 with black rather than red fruit, laced with chimney soot and tobacco scents. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, bold structure and superb acidity keeping everything tied together. Plenty of energy here, white pepper and clove notes towards the vibrant, Tuscan-tinged finish, completing one of the finest Grand Mayne releases in recent years. Superb. Tasted at the Grand Mayne vertical at the property. Read more

Big wood, big fruit—there are no half measures here. The wine is spicy from the tannins and wood, the fruit is densely black with red berry tinges, and the power is evident throughout. This wine has weight.

Grand Mayne’s 2005 (a blend of 75% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon) is a sexy, fleshy St.-Emilion with a dense ruby/purple color and loads of blueberry, cassis and black raspberry fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, luscious, and already drinkable, although capable of lasting another 10-15 years.

Classic aromas of blueberries, cedar, vanillin, black currants, and spring flowers jump from the glass of this dense purple-colored St.-Emilion. Broad, rich, jammy fruit flavors compete with the full-bodied, highly-extracted style that exhibits moderate tannin as well as excellent overall harmony and purity. This cuvee tends to be made in a dense, chewy style, and the 2005 may ultimately rival Grand-Mayne’s brilliant 1998. Anticipated maturity: now-2022. A sleeper of the vintage!

Crushed blackberry aromas, with lots of coffee and toasty oak, lead to a medium-to-full body, with polished, velvety tannins and a vanilla, berry and chocolate aftertaste. Best after 2012. 4,580 cases made.

Mint and malt, juicy red and blackcurrant, some oak in support. Acidity is lively, red and black fruits, rounded tannin and an even finish. Bit of a ping of acid on exit. Solid, rather than inspiring.

Sweet and slightly porty. Alcohol and too sweet. Drying tannins on the finish. (I didn’t like this nearly as much as I have in the past. Group average score 14.36.) Score: 14.5/20

Mid ruby. Rich, fully ripe fragrance. Juicy fruit. Sappy with quite pronounced fine tannins on the finish. Very lively wine without great mass but with vivacity. Real energy and good persistence. No ingredient X but very competent in vaguely modern idiom. Score: 17/20

Winemakers Note

Château Grand Mayne, a Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion to follow! Grand Mayne is surely one of the most promising property among the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Emilion, with its "pied de côte" vineyard producing high quality wines. In the 90's, the estate was already a forerunner: important works have been undertaken to build an underground cellar and the property has been advised by Michel Rolland for twenty years. Today, Jean-Antoine and Damien Nony are the third generation at the helm of the estate. They are part of Bordeaux Oxygen, an association of young producers/owners, among which Mathieu Cuvelier from Clos Fourtet, Jean Triaud from Gloria and Saint-Pierre, or Juliette Bécot from Beau Séjour Bécot, which promote their wines in a dynamic and different way. The quality of the wine is constantly improving. The 2022 vintage is clearly a new milestone in the history of Grand Mayne.  This particularly successful vintage is praised by the international press, like Antonio Galloni who has rated the wine 94-96 points, saying, 'It's a superb Grand Mayne in the making'.
