Collection: Nytimber

Our vineyards share similar characteristics with the best sparkling wine vineyards in the world. Greensand and chalk soils allow our vines, in each of our separate sites, to flourish across the south of England. The climate here allows for the slow ripening of our grapes, allowing us to achieve the optimum levels of ripeness and acidity, as well as the complexity and finesse for which our exquisite wines are renowned. “I DON’T THINK IN YEARS BUT IN GENERATIONS” Eric Heerema OWNER & CHIEF EXECUTIVE Using only estate-grown grapes from our own vineyards ensures that only the finest fruit is used to craft globally acclaimed Nyetimber wines. Our Head Winemaker, Cherie Spriggs, and her Winemaker husband Brad Greatrix assess each handpicked vineyard individually – from choosing the optimal time to harvest the grapes and supervising their gentle pressing to eventual vinification. This meticulous attention to detail allows us to make the most informed blending decisions the following spring. We craft all our wines at Nyetimber according to the traditional method, ageing them for extended periods of time to build complexity and flavour, and allowing for generous post-disgorgement time before release. The Nyetimber estate counts three major milestones in its history. Its earliest beginnings saw it named in the Domesday Book in 1086, almost 1,000 years ago, when the peaceful valley of Nitimbreha made its first appearance in recorded history. (It’s believed Nitimbreha refers to a newly timbered house or perhaps a small timber plantation.) The second milestone was the planting of the first vines, almost 902 years later, in 1988, when the holy trinity of sparkling wine grapes – Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier – found a new home in the lee of the South Downs. And thirdly, Eric Heerema became the Owner and Custodian of Nyetimber in 2006, believing that the estate, with its ideal soil and location, had yet to achieve its full potential. Eric recruited Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs and Winemaker Brad Greatrix, who both shared his vision of crafting the finest English sparkling wines. And since then, Nyetimber wines have gone on to achieve global acclaim, winning international awards and blind-tasting competitions, as well as being recognised by some of the world’s most celebrated wine experts. Spread across several separate sites, our vines are perfectly suited to the greensand and chalk soils of Sussex, Hampshire and Kent. The gentle south-facing slopes allow for the best possible exposure to the English sunshine, ensuring our grapes achieve the optimum level of ripeness before harvest. Head Winemaker Cherie Spriggs assesses every handpicked parcel of grapes for quality, ripeness and character. The fruit is then gently pressed and vinified separately, so Cherie can distinguish the subtle yet distinctive differences between each vineyard parcel. Every year, this provides a varied selection from which Cherie will craft the masterpieces of the Nyetimber range. With our own pressing centre and winery, we guide each step of the journey from vine to bottle.
