94–96 This is a beautiful Yquem, not huge or powerful, but with crispness, honey and freshness, very expressive of the year. The higher than usual proportion of Sauvignon in the blend gives it a real lift.

Needs scant introduction save that 2004 wasn’t a ballistic year. In 2011 d’Yquem will drop ‘Sauternes’ from the label, such is the notoriety. Loads of white, raw oak character in this wine making it less a statement wine and more a wine relying on pedigree, but the back-up fruit is pretty darn amazing anyway. Marzipan heavy bouquet, mushroomy notes, honey. There’s great concentration here, more of the marzipan character, incredible length, incredible texture. Layers of flavour, control in texture. Geez, it’s impressive drinking. Great now too.

Tropically ripe, with dense yet creamy layers of guava, mango, lychee and papaya, all stitched with racy lemon cream and candied grapefruit peel notes. Frangipane-framed finish pumps out wave after wave of unctuous fruit. Starting to hits its second gear, and with old-school Yquem power and muscle. Drink now through 2032. 5,000 cases made.
