Promontory 2019

Promontory is a world apart from the Napa Valley that most people experience. Within this secluded territory, two distinct fault lines mark the divide among volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic formations. This diverse geology stretches across 150m of elevation, on a multitude of dramatic slopes and panoramic exposures. Less than ten percent of the 340 hectares of land is under vine, weaving an intricate patchwork among the wild expanse of forest and woodlands. This natural landscape invites morning fog and cooler air to roll through on an almost daily basis. Wine from the steep hillsides of Promontory reflects the many aspects of the territory: the wild freshness of its native surrounding forests, the cool moisture of the ephemeral fog, and the lifted minerality of its geologic underpinnings. Together, these aspects form the identity of Promontory; the feeling of an almost weightless structure, illuminated from within— an undefinable “otherness” . "This has the class of a First Growth from Bordeaux paired with a Napa sense of texture and fruit." 100pts - Jeb Dunnuck The 2019 vintage: Climatic conditions: A succession of cold, heavy rain showers christened the 2019 growing season. This damp winter—concentrated in February—persisted through April and even extended its influence, sporadically, into May. The chilly weather delayed budbreak by two weeks, with subsequent temperatures favoring the milder end of the scale until late June, when the first of several warming events marked the advent of a variable summer. Notable crests of warmth in July and August peaked briefly before descending into longer troughs of cooling moderation. The changeability of the weather, however, proved an advantage. Ample soil moisture encouraged canopy growth, which, with the cooler climate of the territory, in turn protected the fruit during the short intervals of heat, ensuring a balanced and gradual ripening curve. Tasting notes: The rainy early season contributes to the wine’s aromatic qualities, giving it herbal tones and a mineral freshness. The pattern of mild days and cool nights is mirrored in the wine’s palate through its vibrant acidity and structured tannin profile. The few days of warmth has enhanced the wine texture, providing a flesh that helped the integration of the tannins, that are young but have been beautifully gaining precision.
