Winemakers Notes
VERY LIMITED QUANTITY Alvaro Palacios, the heritage of old world viticulture Descendant of a 4 generation of wine producers, the passion of wine runs in Alvaro Palacios blood. At a time when Spain was known for its branded wines, Alvaro Palacios was driven by a greater “wine grower” vision. He wanted to make a wine that embodies its specific terroir, he wanted to Make Great Classic Wines . 10 years after succeeding in Priorat, Alvaro Palacios Palacios, alongside his nephew Ricardo Pérez Palacios, ventured to Corullón in Bierzo. They were captivated by the region's mystic legacy, diverse soils, and ancient winegrowing culture. In Bierzo, they cultivate Mencía on steep, biodynamic vineyards ranging from 600 to 900 meters in altitude. These noble old vines, aged between 60 and 100 years, produce fragrant, delicate wines with remarkable energy, reflecting the deep heritage of the land. Las Lamas, sensual opulence Small plots on a precipitous slope with fragile, decomposed soils. Small slate flakes on the topsoil reflect the midday sunlight and stimulate grape ripening. The southern aspect at an elevation of 730 meters favours the right microclimate to grow top-class Mencía. These berries result in a voluptuous, stimulating wine. Dense and lively, it is prepared for a slow, gentle evolution. Surface of estate: 4,32 Acres / 1,75 Hectares. The 2023 vintage 25 years have passed since we arrived on the slopes of Corullón and started a journey that has been both intense and rich in learnings. Do we know everything about Bierzo? We might think that we do, but vintages like the most recent one - 2023 - can make you doubt your knowledge and experience to such an extent that you feel like you've only just arrived. Instability. A series of discordant phenomena like hailstorms and warm humidity. Unusually dry springs that no longer surprise us as much as they did before. Early bud-break. Cool weather in June, and extremely hot summer nights. Constant rainfall in September. An endless stream of disruptions! Afterwards, comes the awareness that everything requires effort and has to worked for. 2023 vintage gave charming wines, with notes of Atlantic scrubland and wild grass. The aroma of freshness appears vibrant and intense. Accompanied by dark notes, it outlines the identity of Bierzo, here and now: a land that lives through climatic oscillation with rigour, but with flashes of joy, demanding hard work and rewarding it with a finesse and acidity that seem written by an endless script. Nature, converted into an author, telling the story of our seasons on wildflower-strewn slate slopes.
