Winemakers Notes
Las Pizarras, a Burgundy approach in Chile Las Pizarras project, initiated in 2014 by Viña Errazuriz, embodies a commitment to uncovering the extraordinary terroir of the Aconcagua Coast. Rooted in a terroir-centric philosophy, Las Pizarras represents a paradigm shift in quality for cool-climate Chilean wines. Situated within the Aconcagua Costa D.O., these limited-production wines, akin to Grand Cru, epitomize a distinctive character shaped by metamorphic rock and slate. Benefitting from the nearby Pacific Ocean's cool influence and well-drained soils rich in laminar rock, Las Pizarras vineyards yield Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Syrah of unparalleled complexity, depth, minerality, and natural acidity. Las Pizarras Syrah originates from two distinct plots, one measuring 0.6 hectares and the other 2.6 hectares, each possessing unique characteristics. The soils there are very shallow with less than 50centimetres deep and extremely rocky with 20% - 40% of mostly eroded angular and gravelly stones, laying on volcano-sedimentary rocks. This important weathering allows a good development of the root system in the deeper layer, giving the wines their characteristic minerality, complexity and freshness. The 2023 Vintage: Climatic conditions: 2023 was an outstanding year in Aconcagua Costa, with a later start and a gentle and paced ripening period, that delivered bright and energetic wines. During winter we had more rainfall and colder temperatures than the previous years. The beginning of spring continued with this cool trend. In December, temperatures picked up with a heat summation that was 19% higher than average. It triggered a short and even veraison that was very favourable for a homogeneous ripening. The summer months were cooler, particularly February, due to many days with morning fog and this delayed the beginning of harvest in one week. Towards the end of March, heat accelerated the maturation of the late-ripening varieties. The season was marked by a good balance between texture and tension, with fresh aromas and a mineral finish. Tasting notes: ““Deep, intense purple-red color, with violet hues. Aromas of dark fruits such as fresh blueberries and currants combine with floral notes of lavender, alongside spicy hints of incense and pink pepper. In the palate, intense flavors of ripe fruit, such as red cherries and blueberries, are accompanied by spicy notes. With excellent length and balance, it shows good acidity that contributes to its high juiciness. The chalky tannins result in a wine with good grip and persistence on the palate.” TOMÁS MUÑOZ, Chief Winemaker
