Philip Rich - Halliday Wine Companion

A blend of 60/20/20% shiraz/touriga nacional/tinta cão. Matured in older French oak. The only two golds in Class 10 – Other Red Blends at last year's Yarra Valley Wine Show were this and the Dry Red No. 3, with this wine edging out its stablemate for the trophy! A very bright crimson. A fresh and complex combination of blackberries, cherries and crushed violets aplenty. Persistent and primary on the palate with serious yet fine-grained tannins. Long. Lovely. A wine that will age gracefully, too.

Yarra Yering’s New Territories – which is a pretty cool name, I reckon – is a blend of (60%) Shiraz, (20%) Touriga Naçional and (20%) Tinta Cao. You get interest, you get balance, you get drinkability. You get structure too, and a dry, tannic food-friendliness. Ferrous notes, dried herbs, graphite, red cherry and a twiggyness to the tannin. There’s no real sweetness to the fruit but it feels absolutely ripe. I’m loving the dry, almost powdery feel of this – among other things.
