Ken Gargett - Winepilot

A variation on the usual GSM blend, with Tempranillo included here, instead of the usual Mataro. The fruit is sourced from Margaret River (70%) and Frankland River (30%). The blend is 41% Shiraz, 34% Tempranillo and 25% Grenache. The wine spent ten months maturing in older French oak. Magenta purple in colour, there is a most alluring nose with notes of raspberries, bay leaves, dried herbs, cherries, spices and kirsch. There is good concentration throughout, and impressive length and persistence, through to fine tannins. Enjoy this over the next six to eight years.

It's fruit-forward and fragrant on the nose, showing dark plum, sweet cherry, floral, thyme, and game notes, leading to a beautifully rounded palate offering supple texture and fine tannins. Nicely structured and balanced with a pleasing dry finish.

A simple, easy-drinking style full of plump red and black fruits, lots of spices, all woodsy and a little exotic, and a touch vegetal. The full-bodied palate emboldened by fresh acidity and sinewy, grainy tannins; just a bitterness on the finish detracts. Best in its youth with hearty fare.
