Ken Gargett - Winepilot

As always with these guys, this wine is ridiculously good value. Coming from a wonderful vintage in Margaret River, the wine spent sixteen months maturing in French oak, 35% of which was new. I really can’t think of a single reason why any lover of cracking Cabernet doesn’t have several cases of this in their cellar. Deep maroon hue, this is intense and even slightly austere at this early stage, with good concentration. There is power here but also balance and length. The nose gives us notes of black fruits, cassis, smoked meats, dry herbs, graphite and bacon fat. There is good oak integration. A supple texture with serious length, this should drink beautifully for the next fifteen years.

Gary Walsh - The Wine Front

Given the price and age of vines, and the location (Wilyabrup) this is something of a bargain. There’s also 5% Malbec in the blend. Blackberry, mint and bay leaf, dark chocolate, tobacco, some spicy biscuit oak. It’s medium-bodied, black fruit, a nutty hazelnut and chocolate flavour, perhaps shows a little too much spicy oak, though the flavour and presence is certainly there. Tannin is grainy and firm, and the finish is good too.

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is plump and approachable, with good typicity and complexity. Fleshy upfront flavors of cassis and crushed leaves are underpinned by spicy oak. Supple and fruit-driven in style, it finishes with dusty oak tones and edgy tannins.
