This is no easy-over, sweet, ripe red bubbly. There is some serious intrigue in here, with clear evidence of winery-aged material included in the multi-vintage cuvee. It’s made in the traditional method – kept on its lees in this very bottle before finished and dosed with eight-year-old fortified shiraz. So, that’s the background, and well worth knowing. To pour and taste, this is right up there with the best of its class, and yes, there’s a wave of mint-eucalyptus to start, which is totally acceptable in such an Aussie wine style. The rest is as rustic and rural as all get out: earthy, rocky, leathery as well as suggesting tinges of kitchen garden herbs like rosemary and sage that have been seeped in a bucket of crushed blackberries. There’s more too – with a decent mouthful of tannins to grip and guide you on its lingering, soulful way. Impressive and heroic.

Sparkling Shiraz is a fabulous style of wine that is often overlooked. This Mitchell Wines release is blended with vintages back to 12 years. A moreish and complex wine ready for your drinking pleasure. It's bottle fermented and left on lees for 18 months before dosage with an eight-year-old fortified Shiraz. The chocolate and minty factor is high and draws you in early. A lick of sweetness folds into the layered berry fruits. A delectable earthiness sits at the core of this wine which screams for butterflied lamb on the barbecue, a classic steak or it will also eat up a chocolate tart for dessert. I just had it without food - it was too good to wait for a meal. Great stuff! Drink to five years

The latest release of Mitchell’s Peppertree Sparkling Shiraz is out and it is a good one. The wine comes from just a single block of old , dry-grown Clare Valley shiraz that gives Mitchell some of its best fruit. And then for the non-vintage blend they reach back into the cellar bringing together some old and young vintages to give good complexity, which is then topped off with fortified shiraz. It’s a traditional style with generous and luscious blueberry and mulberry fruits with attractive layers of spice plus layers of baked earth aged complexity sitting in the background. In the mouth there is some balanced sweetness and not too much with plush dark fruits leading to a lingering silky finish. It is seductive to say the least and will be a good drink over the next five years.

A blend containing vintages from the Peppertree vineyard stretching back 17 years, bottle fermented and left on lees for 18 months before dosage with eight-year fortified Shiraz. This is text book stuff, able to express vivacity of youth with the complex cragginess of age all at once. Licorice, black plums, eucalypt bark and dark raspberries, Well-worn leather and a bit of baked earth. It's beautifully soft and supple, dangerously easy to drink and a timely reminder of just how good these wines can be
