Chateau D'Avize 2015

Château d’Avize is a new cuvée of the Champagne House Leclerc Briant which is owned by an American couple, Mark Nunnelly and Denise Dupré. Any mention of a “Château” is rare in Champagne, because use of the term is quite restrictive, with strict standards such as having a winery and storage unit in the place where the vines are planted. The Château d’Avize cuvée was originally created by Hervé Jestin, the pope of organic and biodynamic viticulture in Champagne, and now Leclerc Briant’s cellar master. The grapes come from a beautiful 2.5-hectare plot in the ‘château’ appellation, ideally located at the foot of the château d’Avize, in the heart of the village. The 2015 vintage: 2015 marks a turning point. A promise fulfilled. After several years of conversion, this vintage is the first from Château d’Avize to be certified organic. A culmination, but also a beginning — that of an even more intimate dialogue between the earth, the sky, and the hand. The harvest began beneath a summer sky, in the generous light of September. The grapes, bathed in warmth, reached perfect maturity without losing any of their tension. A broad, generous year, where the fruit ripened unhurried, caressed by the light. The wine gently bears the memory of that balance and harmony. Tasting notes: The wine is ample, radiant, as if touched by the sun. The balance is finely drawn, carried by a mineral thread that evokes Avize’s chalk — discreet yet indelible. The finish is long, fresh, almost mouthwatering, leaving a lingering impression of sunlight and white stone.
