The most sought-after wine in our portfolio, this limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon represents the pinnacle of Chappellet winemaking and embodies the elegant power and complexity of Pritchard Hill winegrowing. Like the great Bordeaux wines that first inspired Donn Chappellet, this wine is crafted by blending Cabernet Sauvignon with other classic Bordeaux varietals. The wine was aged for 22 months in 100 percent new French oak. Grown on our rocky, mountainside vineyard, our Cabernets have consistently displayed an ability to age for several decades.
<p>Embodying the essence of great mountain-grown Cabernet Sauvignon and the majestic terroir or Pritchard Hill, this wine is gloriously opulent and elegant, immediately demanding attention with aromas of violet, black currant, cassis, ripe blackberry, graphite and sweet smoke. As it opens up, fascinating layers of sandalwood and cardamom emerge, as well as hints of vanilla bean, nutmeg,
dark chocolate and anise. On the impeccably balanced palate, complex flavors of ripe dark berries and spice dominate, framed by silky, polished tannins that carry the flavors to a long, epic finish.

A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is another wonderfully evocative triumph from this family-owned Pitchard Hill pioneer. Deep garnet-purple colored, it storms out of the glass with profound scents of crème de cassis, blackberry preserves, licorice and mulberries, plus hints of unsmoked cigars, wild sage and tar. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers fantastic intensity and great poise, offering fine-grained, ripe tannins and bold freshness, finishing long and mineral laced.

Jim Gordon - Wine Enthusiast
An extremely concentrated and well-structured wine, it offers flinty, toasty, tarry aromas, dark chocolate, black currant and espresso flavors on a thick blanket of fine-grained tannins that give a very firm mouthfeel. The wine has the depth and structure to age and improve for decades, as well as the track record to prove it.

Blackberries, blueberries, black licorice, ink and flowers on the nose. Tar, too. Full-bodied with plush, integrated tannins that are intertwined to pure velvet. The finish goes on and on. Wonderful balance and harmony. 2022 release. So excellent to drink now, but will be even better in 2023 and onwards.

Tasting the 2019 again with Phillip Corralo-Titus and Dominic Chappellet, directly after the 2018 Pritchard Hill Cabernet, revealed how some of Napa's top wines sometimes go through introverted phases. The 2018 was quietly intense with a great deal of restraint, while the 2019 had blossomed since tasting it a year and a half ago and was even more expressive on the nose with perfectly delineated violets, chocolate, dried herbs, and iron-like earthy minerals nuanced by coffee and caramel-kissed cedarwood. Full-bodied with very fine, compact, tight-grained tannins that build in stature on the full-bodied palate. The dark, ripe black fruit is laced with salty iron-clad minerality, complemented by savoury bay laurel and sage through the lengthy finish. Possesses the coiled-up freshness of the vintage. The Pritchard Hill wines are the best lots from the estate. Director of winemaking Phillip Corralo-Titus and his team begin tasting lots in March after each harvest, zeroing in on lots with perfect levels of colour, tannin, and complex anthocyanins. One point of evolution in the flagship Pritchard Hill Cabernet wines is that since 2018, Malbec or Cabernet Franc have yet to make the final cut.

Antonio Galloni MW - Vinous
The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Pritchard Hill is a potent, massively tannic wine. Black fruit, graphite, licorice, spice, menthol, chocolate and dried herbs abound. A huge, tannic beast, the 2019 is all brawn today and not terribly finessed. This is not a particularly distinguished vintage for Chappellet's flagship.
Winemakers Notes
The estate
In 1967, Donn Chappellet dreamed of making a wine to rival the great First Growths of Bordeaux. Pritchard Hill was the answer to that dream.
Considered a pioneer in the Napa Valley, Chappellet established the second new winery there after the repeal of Prohibition and became the 18th registered member of the Napa Valley Vintners. Family owned for over 50 years, Chappellet is recognized as one of the great Napa Valley wineries. Today, the second generation is committed to continuing the vision of their parents, Donn and Molly Chappellet.

The 2019 vintage
Weather conditions
The 2019 growing season began with cool, rainy weather throughout winter and spring, which delayed budbreak slightly and resulted in a robust crop and vigorous canopies. The weather remained temperate throughout summer, followed by perfectly timed warm weather in October.
