Winemakers Notes
Angélus, an emblem of excellence Nestled less than a kilometer away from the iconic Saint-Emilion bell tower, Château Angélus occupies the 'foot of the hill,' basking in the sun-drenched south-facing slopes. Here, a significant portion of the vineyards is devoted to Cabernet Franc, which imparts its unique character to the estate's signature wines year after year. Since 1782, Château Angélus has remained under the ownership and stewardship of the de Boüard family. In 2012, a significant milestone marked the transition of power as the 8th generation, represented by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, took over the management of the estate. Infused with passion, dynamism, and unwavering determination, Stéphanie is resolute in her commitment to uphold and enhance Angélus's esteemed reputation, perpetually driven by the same exacting standards in crafting wines of unparalleled excellence. The 2023 Vintage: "L'affranchi": This vintage has been named L'Affranchi because of its particularity, directly linked to the climatology of the year 2023, which often caught the teams off-guard and aroused strong emotions, sometimes even concern. The 2023 Vintage by Stéphanie de Bouärd-Rivoal: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0lkdDhwAv0 Climatic conditions: The mild, rainy spring led to heavy downy mildew pressure, but hard work kept the threat under control. A dry, sunny period followed, leading to ideal flowering and a generous harvest. The cool, stormy summer required rigorous preventive action to protect the vines. Harvesting took place from September 14th to October 1st, with well-balanced, rich and energetic juices. The maceration phase revealed the aromatic richness of the berries and an intense violet color. Tasting notes: Bright purple in colour and particularly intense. The aromas and typical character of this vintage have been conserved from picking through to running off. The nose is bursting with flowers and black fruit to start, becoming more complex and broader with aeration leading to graphite notes and subtly mentholated nuances. The palate, with its clean, energetic attack, is built on a framework of spicy Cabernet Franc and superbly integrated oak, discreetly present in support of a wine that is already great. The length on the palate is carried by the freshness, acidity and ethereal tannins that characterise this vintage, full of tension and great elegance
