Winemakers Notes
Château Trottevieille, the elegance of a unique terroir
The name is told to be derived from the fact that an old lady lived there in this chartreuse in the 14th century. This little lady used to walk down to the close-by crossing where the stagecoaches stopped on their way coming from Bordeaux. As the lady seemingly often hasted to the coaches, the people of Saint-Emilion called her “la trotte vieille”, the “old trot”.
Classified Premier Grand Cru AOC Saint-Émilion since 1955, Château TrotteVieille is acknowledged as one of the greatest wines in Saint-Émilion. Having fallen in love with it, Marcel Borie purchased the property in 1947. The estate is run today by the Castéja family.
Château TrotteVieille is located on a superb slope to the east of the village of Saint-Émilion. The vineyard covers a terroir of 12 hectares made up of almost half Merlot, half Cabernet Franc with a little bit of Cabernet Sauvignon. It is one of the rare estates to still have very old Cabernet Franc vines dating back to before the outbreak of phylloxera, more than 140 years ago.
The 2021 vintage, a happy end
Philippe Castéja tells you about this vintage: https://bit.ly/Trottevieille2021
After a difficult gestation period marked by frost and mildew pressure, the harvest, in mid-October under a sunny and dry sky, of superb Cabernets, fragrant, round and silky, gave birth to a beautiful vintage.
"
Garnet with brilliant hues, the Château TrotteVieille 2021 shines with its aromatic brilliance, with notes of red fruits (cherry, raspberry) and flowers. After a smooth attack, it develops a silky texture, rich in flavours but with a lot of freshness. The tannins are precise, very light extractions have allowed to preserve their delicacy. The finish is marked by the characteristic salinity of this calcareous terroir.
" Axel Marchal, Doctor of oenology.
