Gary Walsh - The Wine Front

Vineyard planted by Charles Angas in the 1890s. Plum, forest berries, roast beef, sage, black olive, mint and toasted oak. It’s full-bodied, though not especially heavy, concentrated, savoury things mingle with blackcurrant and blackberry, there’s supple tightly-knit tannin, balanced acidity, and it finishes spicy and sage-brushed with excellent length.

A single-site wine made from an Eden Valley vineyard planted by Charles Angas in the 1890s. Such a lovely wine. Detailed black and blue fruits with hints of cedar, sage, tea leaves, licorice, roasting meats, mountain herbs, layers of spice, pressed flowers, olive tapenade and earth. Excellent focus, pure fruit and length of flavour set against a ripe, fine tannin backdrop with a fresh seam of acidity propelling things along nicely.

The 2021 Pure Eden Shiraz is inky and intense, with red and black berries, warm baking spices, cedar, clove and cinnamon. In the mouth, the wine is full bodied, opulent and rich. The dried herbs, quartz and crushed rocks lend the wine some balancing qualities. The foil to the fruit is attractive. This is a wonderful wine of intensity and charm. It feels a little more pared back than some of the other cuvées from this producer, a quality I am fond of. 14.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Black cherries, black beans, peppered steak and violets on the nose of this caressing, perfumed shiraz. It’s full-bodied, supple and creamy on the palate, with deliciously soft and ripe layers.
