Winemakers Note

Gonzague & Claire Lurton Estates, a family history Claire Villars Lurton and Gonzague Lurton both come from great Bordeaux winegrowing families: the Merlaut family and the Lurton family. In the early 90's, at the age of 32 and 26, these two forces of nature proudly took over their family estates: Château Durfort Vivens, 2nd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Ferrière, 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Margaux, Château Haut-Bages Libéral, 5th Grand Cru Classé in 1855 in Pauillac and Château La Gurgue in Margaux. In the Bordeaux world of Grands Crus Classés, Claire and Gonzague are pioneers in organic farming, biodynamics and now in agroecology and agroforestry. Convinced that the vines can become resilient and autonomous through a meticulous respect for nature and driven by the desire to pass on a healthy vineyard to their children, their vineyards were among the first to be dualy certified in organic and biodynamic farming and represent today the largest biodynamically cultivated area in the region. Claire and Gonzague are among those people who are driven by their passion, faithful to their deepest values, like true agricultural explorers always searching new practices, adapted to their lands, allowing them to reveal their terroir and to produce living wines; in the end, to produce Great Wines that matter. Château La Gurgue, the beauty of Margaux's terroirs Château La Gurgue was acquired by the Merlaut family in 1978. In 1992, Claire Villars Lurton took over the management of the estate after her mother, Bernadette Merlaut Villars, passed away. She is the third generation of woman to manage this estate. She has been carrying on her mother's work by finding the style of the wine of La Gurgue: seductive, true, sincere. Its 10-hectare vineyard is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation and is contiguous to the vines of Château Margaux. According to the famous Férèt guide, its plots are located on the most beautiful hillside of Margaux and historically come from three Grands Crus Classés (Malescot St Exupéry, Lascombes and Rauzan Gassies). Its soils are made of deep gravel on limestone marl. The estate is certified in Organic Farming since 2016 and dualy certified in Biodynamics by Demeter and Biodyvin since 2018. These new practices respectful of nature and its ecosystem, combined with the infrastructure and know-how of the Château Ferrière teams from which the estate benefits, have revealed the beauty of the terroirs of Château La Gurgue. The 2021 vintage, a wine to enjoy La Gurgue 2021 reveals a great drinkability with a nice intensity of the fruit and round tannins that will allow wine lovers to enjoy it over the decade.
