The 2021 Le Carillon d'Angélus offers a mixture of red and black fruit on the nose, hints of cedar and clove, and even a touch of pain d'épices . The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a fine bead of acidity, good weight and freshness and a suave and very harmonious finish. I have remarked on the melioration of Carillon in the last two years, and this continues that trend. Read more

Delicate raspberry purée perfume on the nose alongside roses and violets. So charming and welcoming. Smooth and succulent, the sharpness is there with the strawberry and raspberry fruit, plus graphite and slate touches as well. Extremely silky on the palate, the flavours just glide, the tannins are pure silk, excellently textured and the fruit has a crystalline purity with a tangy edge and chalky centre. Sensitive and delicately framed in terms of grace on the palate, but with an intensity of energy and pure fruit. Very playful, drinkable. focused, bright and shining with tension. A lovely Carillon that benefitted in 2021 from its own cellar as well as 10% more Cabernet Franc in the blend than usual.

The 2021 Le Carillon d'Angélus opens with a burst of red/purplish fruit, spice, rose petal, lavender, mocha and new oak. Palpable energy drives the balance. The aromatics are broad and quite expressive, but on the palate, the 2021 remains strict, as the oak needs time to fully integrate. Let's see how this turns out.

Winemakers Note

Angélus,  an outstanding terroir Situated less than a kilometre from the famous Saint-Emilion bell tower, on the much-vaunted south-fathing "foot of the hill", Château Angélus benefits from an outstanding terroir composed of a large proportion of Cabernet Franc. It is this unique character born of the south-facing Saint-Emilion slopes that make it a signature every year. Since 1782, Château Angélus has been managed by the de Boüard family. It was classified Grand Cru Classé in 1954 during the first Saint-Emilion classification. Thanks to the constant evolution of its practices and techniques, both for the terroir and the typicity of its wines, the 2012 classification promoted Angélus to Premier Grand Cru Classé A alongside Ausone, Cheval Blanc and Pavie. 2012 is also the year of transmission, as the 8th generation, embodied by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, took over the management of the estate. Passionate, dynamic and determined, she is committed to consolidating and developing the reputation of Angélus, driven each year by the same high standards in the production of a wine of excellence. Carillon d'Angélus, a unique second wine Carillon d'Angélus was born with the 1987 vintage. Since Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal took over the management of the vineyard, she has succeeded in positioning this second wine at an unprecedented level, by giving it its own identity and an extraordinary new cellar specially dedicated to it, a technical tool of rare performance for a second wine. 2021, The Unexpected Presentation of the vintage: https://bit.ly/Angélus2021 2021 Tasting notes The colour is bright and deep. The nose, which reveals more Cabernet Franc than other vintages of Carillon, offers aromas of spicy, ripe, fresh fruit. Showing precision and verticality, the palate is underpinned by very good acidity and dense, ripe tannins.
