I must admit I’m surprised to be tasting a quality wine that is still available from this very good vintage. Anyway, I am and the good news for wine drinkers is that it is a classy offering that has moved into a zone of maturity you don’t normally expect at this price point. Leather, dark chocolate with deeper black fruits and a plush rich fruit cake character. Chalky tannins and a little oak cuddle and coax through to a focused finish.

Embers offers a decent drink at a decent price point while meeting varietal expectations. Not complex yet full of mulberries and cassis, herbal with flashes of tomato leaf and basil; jubey, bright with perky acidity. Mid-weighted, sinewy tannins, a touch raw yet food off-sets that.

The flavours of this wine are quite lovely. Blackcurrant, leather, pencil shavings, chocolate and boysenberry, the latter adding a juicy, sweet freshness. There are some gum leaf characters here too, which also promote the overall fresh feel. I would rate this wine higher save for the finish, which clamps down a little too soon, the momentum interrupted. At $20 it would be worth a shot; at $30 it’s a stretch.
