96+ 2017 was a very low-yielding and warm year, and the Cabernet Sauvignon grapes for the 2017 Viñedo Chadwick were harvested earlier than ever, in early March, to avoid excessive ripeness and keep good freshness. This has the classical minty Maipo profile, with more grip, concentration and tannin—polished, fine-grained tannin—than the 2016. It has good weight and combines power with elegance, in a clean and classical style. The oak is nicely integrated, and in 2014 they started using larger 2,500-liter foudres even for the Cabernet Sauvignon; the profile of the wine has changed toward more integration and less presence of the oak aromas and flavors. This is textbook Maipo Cabernet Sauvignon with a small touch of Petit Verdot in an elegant way. Even if I like the style of the 2016 very much, I'll give the edge to this 2017. 7,126 bottles were filled in February 2019. Like Seña, Viñedo Chadwick is also a separate project from the owner of Errázuriz. The reason why is mainly because this comes from a vineyard in Alto Maipo, the classical zone for Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile, not in the Aconcagua Valley.

Joaquin Hidalgo - Vinous

A blend of 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petit Verdot from Maipo Alto that spent 22 months in French oak, 80% new and 20% casks. A warm year enhanced the Verdot, making the blackcurrants and sweet spices more lively. An expressive wine with a round, polished palate, juicy and mouth-watering on the tongue thanks to the elegant, slightly reactive tannins. Will age very well in the bottle.

Winemakers Note

The vineyard around the family home had produced outstanding red grapes for decades, and Eduardo Chadwick, foreseeing the potential of this unique terroir, convinced his father to convert his beloved polo field into vineyards. In 1992, it was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. Viñedo Chadwick is located 650 m above sea level at Puente Alto in the Maipo Valley, in the southeastern sector of Santiago at the foot of the Andes Mountains along the northern bank of the Maipo River. The 15-hectare vineyard is considered one of Chile’s best terroirs for producing Cabernet Sauvignon of exceptional quality. The Mediterranean climate has a long dry season, and rainfall is concentrated in the winter (328 mm), while the high daytime-night time temperature oscillation is one of the main factors responsible for the intense colour of the wines sourced from this zone. The vineyard is located on an old alluvial terrace of the Maipo River, on barely fertile soil with just 40-cm of clay-loam (15%-20% clay content) atop an alluvial layer (70% stone) that provides excellent drainage. This enables an ideal balance of vegetative growth and fruit. The cool morning breezes that blow down from the mountains, the placement of the rows, and the moderate daytime temperatures allow the grapes to ripen to perfection while preserving their freshness and acidity. Vintage Notes A hot season accompanied by low yields delivered wines of outstanding ripeness and extraordinary concentration. Harvesting early in the season produced a Viñedo Chadwick 2017 wine that stands out for its structure, along with the intensity and depth of its fruit. 96% Cabernet Sauvignon, 4% Petit Verdot
