2017 Promontory

Promontory is a world apart from the Napa Valley that most people experience. Within this secluded territory, two distinct fault lines mark the divide among volcanic, sedimentary, and metamorphic formations. This diverse geology stretches across 150m of elevation, on a multitude of dramatic slopes and panoramic exposures. Less than ten percent of the 340 hectares of land is under vine, weaving an intricate patchwork among the wild expanse of forest and woodlands. This natural landscape invites morning fog and cooler air to roll through on an almost daily basis. Wine from the steep hillsides of Promontory reflects the many aspects of the territory: the wild freshness of its native surrounding forests, the cool moisture of the ephemeral fog, and the lifted minerality of its geologic underpinnings. Together, these aspects form the identity of Promontory; the feeling of an almost weightless structure, illuminated from within— an undefinable “otherness” . 2017 vintage In 2017, two warming events took place. The September warm spell was the most significant and led to an increase of sugar concentration in the berries. During the next 10 to 14 days after the temperature spike, the vines recovered their natural physiology with an unusual regression of the sugar levels, while preserving a brighter-than-expected acidity. Impressed by this fresh balance, we began harvesting but our work was interrupted by the wildfire on October 8th. At that time, 75% of the fruit had arrived safely at the winery; none collected after that date was considered for inclusion.
