The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon is another wine that has turned out very well. In this vintage, the Cabernet Sauvignon and Rubicon aren't that materially different. Red fruit, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco, menthol and licorice all develop in the glass. Here, too, I am quite impressed with the wine's freshness.

A barrel sample blend made up of 86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc, the deep purple-black colored 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Rubicon displays a simply gorgeous nose of red roses, cherry pie, black raspberries and blackberry compote with touches of black tea, incense, cinnamon stick and tilled soil. Medium-bodied with a firm frame of grainy tannins, the palate delivers compelling layers of floral and earth-inspired flavors with a long, perfumed finish. 4,070 cases are estimated to be produced.

Winemakers Note

Among the Napa Cult wines, Inglenook is one the oldest estate, that kept a high quality level for over a century. The property has been bought by Francis Ford Coppola in the 1970’s and the wine is made by Philippe Bascaules, General Director of Château Margaux. The production of Rubicon, Inglenook’s premier red wine, began in 1978 and restored the Estate’s legacy of making world-class wines. Rubicon is an elegant blend from the finest vineyard blocks, and showcases the highest potential of both the Estate and the vintage. Appellation: Rutherford, Napa Valley 100% Organic certified - CCOF since 1991 Barrel Regime: 18 Months, 100% French Oak, 75% New Oak Vintage Notes Rainfall in winter and spring of 2017 was bountiful, totaling nearly 50 inches. These condi - tions allowed for a smooth transition into bloom and fruit set. The beautiful organically- farmed fruit used to produce the Inglenook 2017 Rubicon came from select vineyard blocks on our estate. We harvested Merlot on August 31st, began harvesting Cabernet Sauvignon on September 5th, and concluded with Cabernet Franc on September 28th. The fruit showed balanced acidity across the board, which created a compelling freshness in the final blend Winemaker’s Tasting Notes The 2017 Rubicon is expansive, with intriguing depth. The wine has exciting complexity below the surface, which enhances its expressiveness. There is a defined aromatic core of ripe red and black fruits, especially raspberry, black cherry, and cassis. It is seamless on the palate, with finely-polished tannins. The lingering finish is refreshing, with notes of crème de cassis and cocoa powder.
