A more savory, moody, strong expression. Deeply rich nose with minerals, flowers, wild herbs, tar, toasted spices and pepper. The dark berries have a smoky edge. Minerally edge, too, thanks to the 60 per cent mourvèdre. The palate has glossy, ripe and super-fine tannins in sheets. Deep-set, dark plums and blueberries in the finish. Noble tannins. Age-worthy. Matt Walls - Decanter

A tasting of the Courrieux vineyard, a single parcel of Mourvèdre planted in 1909 that always makes up around 70% of the blend. It's a wine that makes you inhale deeply. It has a wonderful, regal, stunning nose of violets, blueberries, and blackcurrant almost. It's seamless on the palate, with some camphor, menthol and rosemary notes to the fruit. There's sublime freshness, and the tannins are full and dense but very ripe. A mouthfilling, mouth coating and very intense wine, with a saline finish. Potentially worthy of a perfect score.

Josh Raynolds - Vinous

Deep vivid magenta. A highly complex bouquet displays candied black and blue fruits, incense and musky earth aromas; violet, licorice and Indian spice notes build in the glass. Sweet and expansive on the palate, offering deeply concentrated, mineral-laced blueberry, cherry compote, fruitcake and floral pastille flavors that are given spicy lift and bite by a late peppery flourish. Tightens up slowly on a strikingly long, chewy, floral-driven finish framed by dusty, steadily building tannins.

Tasted three weeks after bottling, I couldn't quite bring myself to give the elusive three-digit score to this admittedly super wine. Perhaps once the 2016 Chateauneuf du Pape Hommage à Jacques Perrin has been in bottle a bit longer, as Mourvèdre seems to go into a bit of a funk when recently bottled. For now, it's merely profound, packing in savory, mossy nuances, hints of exotic dried spices like star anise and cardamom and layers of rich, plummy fruit that manage to be full-bodied and deliciously intense without being weighty or overwrought. Creamy, lush, intense and long, it's a tdf (tour de force) in CdP.

Dense, concentrated, inky purple/red colour. Amazing concentration and density of bouquet: rich black fruits, spices, licorice and espresso coffee. Lush palate, dense and massive but soft tannins and fleshy, layered and mouth-filling. Sweet plush fruit and great structure to match. The finish is very clean, balanced and long. An astonishing wine with a huge future.

This delivers a torrent of lively raspberry pâte de fruit and plum reduction notes, infused liberally with anise, fruitcake and black tea nuances. Ripe and dense, yet lively, defined and fresh in feel, coursing over graphite and leather accents on the well-structured finish. Best from 2021 through 2045. 52 cases imported.

Richard Hemming MW - JancisRobinson.com

Sample of Mourvèdre which always comes from the same parcel planted in 1909. This is the core of Hommage, making up approximately 70% to be blended with Grenache, Counoise and others.Intense blackberry fruit on the nose with crystalline purity and extremely fine tannic weave on the palate. Such elegance! Has vivid, expert fruit. Stunning. Score: 18.5/20

Jancis Robinson MW

60% Mourvèdre, 20% Grenache, 20% Syrah. Deep crimson, from the outstanding vintage for the southern Rhône. Much more intense and focused than most Châteauneuf. Some very obvious sweetness. And then masses of tannin. Decidedly embryonic but with the sweet warmth of a Châteauneuf, albeit in bundled tightly into an iron corset. Score: 17++/20

Winemakers Note

Affirming your uniqueness and standing up for your ideas really is a way of life. By defining new frontiers, as other great pioneers did, Jacques Perrin has earned his place in the history of great wines. To honor the memory and the heritage of this man who forged their skills and guided their philosophy, the fifth generation of Famille Perrin has created this highly personal and remarkable cuvee «Hommage à Jacques Perrin». Behind its out of the ordinary and exclusive character lie the secrets of a wine with a purpose, a bearer of truth. It carries naturally within itself its roots, the memory of its place of origin, without reserve. A truly uncompromising wine, a wine of conviction and character that makes no concessions . A wine that can only exist in ideal conditions, that allow the truth of its origins, at the source of taste, to be revealed. Although « Hommage à Jacques Perrin » is an authentic Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it is nevertheless an interpretation, an individual vision, with full respect for the terroir from which its springs. At its origin, a remarkable terroir of very old vines tended as naturally as possible, according to the principles of biodynamics that were so dear to Jacques Perrin, to extract the purest and the truest expression. Its unique stylistic signature is also influenced by a veritable choice, that of the dominance of Mourvèdre in the blend. This ancestral grape variety of Châteauneuf du Pape, rehabilitated by Jacques Perrin, is particularly difficult to work with and can only flourish in very specific climatic conditions. But, when it is truly mastered, it offers the wine its unique personality, with enormous complexity and aromas of black fruit, spices and leather. « Hommage à Jacques Perrin » is also notable for its refined, noble and elegant tannins and its perfect balance between freshness and concentration. With their great purity, each of its vintages mature slowly and evolve in complexity thanks to their remarkable ageing potential.
