2015 Chateau-Fuisse Pouilly-Fuisse Le Clos

The Collective Review

Wine of vintage from Macon, the Chateau-Fuisse Pouilly-Fuisse Le Clos is also one of the regions oldest and most famous 'walled' estates. Its a small 2 hectare plot, and is solely owned and vinified by the one estate (known as a Monopole), the 15th century Chateau-Fuisse. As far as southern Burgundy Chardonnay goes, this is very much on the bigger end of the spectrum. Wine Spectator declared it ‘opulent’, Roger Voss at Wine Enthusiast said it was ‘rich, concentrated and densely fruited’ while Stephen Tanzer at Vinous declared it ‘concentrated’ and ‘conveying’ and akin to a great wine from Puligny. Rarely do parcels of Burgundy this good come onto the market, and rarely at this price, with bottle age and in such pristine condition (and with perfect provenance).

This wholly owned, single walled vineyard is by the Chateau de Fuissé, home of the Vincent family. From old vines, the wine is rich, concentrated and densely fruity. It is also structured, spicy from aging in mainly new-wood barrels. With acidity and crispness along with a steely texture, it will age. Drink from late 2019. Read more

Salted pineapple and ripe Sicilian lemon fruit nose. The palate is crisp and multi-layered with evident oak, tension and long length.

This is opulent, with a smoky, toasty cast to the peach, lemon and stone flavors. Tightens up midpalate, where the vibrant structure takes over. Builds to a lingering aftertaste of lemon, spice and mineral. Drink now through 2025.

Palish bright yellow. Very rich, full-blown aromas of yellow peach, fresh apricot, spices, roasted nuts and minerals; this has the weight and salty minerality of a top Puligny wine. Plush, ripe and very concentrated, conveying an almost exotic orange oil and quince aspect to its yellow fruit and spicy oak flavors leavened by saline minerality. The most intense of these 2015s, with penetrating mineral-driven acidity carrying the finish. My favorite of the estate's '15s for its energy and concentration--and it may yet improve further with time in the cellar. 92-93

The 2015 Pouilly Fuisse le Clos is the only bona fide walled vineyard (2.69 hectares) in Fuissé that contains a variety of soils ranging from deep clay at the bottom, marne in the mid-slope and limestone at the top. The vines range from 40 to 87 years old and have been blended together since the 2014 vintage. Le Clos is matured in around 75% new oak; one-year-old barrels are employed for the limestone soils. It has a very fine bouquet, with hints of wild honey, quince, marmalade and a touch of apricot conserve that gains intensity with continued aeration. The palate is well balanced with a brisk, lightly spiced entry, just a tang originating from a seam of orange rind, with a potent nutmeg and hazelnut-driven finish that is very harmonious. Clearly the standout cuvée from Château Fuissé this year.

Monopole. Ripe but oaky fruit here, with a touch of orange on the nose. Intense and mouth-watering and a big step up in terms of harmony compared with the Tête de Cru. Long, mealy/leesy finish.

Tasting Notes

The 2015 Pouilly-Fuisse Le Clos displays a pale yellow color with hints of green and a nice brilliance. Crisp on the nose, ripe and powerful, with aromas of toasted bread, fresh almonds and hints of fresh butter. The wine shows lots of finesse and elegance, white flowers and some mineral. On the palate, the wine is dense and concentrated, powerful with the beautiful complexity of the vintage. Ripe and crisp. The finish is long, rich and elegant at the time.

Winemakers Note

The Château-Fuissé 'Le Clos' covers a surface of 6.75 hectares and surrounds the Château and winery. The meaning of the word "Clos" in Burgundy has always been linked to an ancestral property surrounded by at least three walls build from the dry-stones brought to the surface by the culture of the soil. The oldest vines are situated in the mid slope and were planted in 1929. The Pouilly-Fuissé "Le Clos" reaches a natural balance between richness, ripeness and the finesse of mineral complexity.
