Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec. From Sonoma. Black fruit, smoky mocha oak, truffle and tobacco, liquorice, spices and a violet perfume. Medium to full bodied, fleshy and full of plump tannin, smoke and earthy flavours – a wine with plenty of bass notes – and then the red fruits and flowers come through to complete the picture. Those powdery fine tannins run long on the finish, and clean smoke and earthiness trails in the distance. Flat out brilliant. 97+ now or 98.

The 2013 La Muse, like all of the 2013s, comes about one-third from Alexander Valley vineyards, 40-plus percent from Chalk Hill, and the rest Knights Valley and Bennett Valley – all high-elevation hillside vineyards. A blend of 89% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec at 14.3% alcohol, the wine is amazingly like a great vintage of Petrus, with mulberry, black cherry, licorice, truffle and unctuous, thick, juicy fruit all present in this full-bodied masterpiece. The tannins are still present. The wine has purity and savory presence and is remarkable. The finish goes on for well past a minute. This wine would probably benefit from 5-8 years of bottle age and last 40-50 years.

The 2013 La Muse (a 3,800-case blend of 89% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 3% Malbec) boasts an inky, opaque purple color as well as abundant aromas of pen ink, chocolate, mocha, black cherry jam, mulberries and a touch of oak. Opulent and full-bodied with terrific acidity and richness as well as a 50-second finish, this is the most forward of the three 2013 cuvées. It should drink well for 25-35 years. All three 2013s appear to have incredible potential. I look forward to tasting them out of bottle.

The 2013 La Muse is maturing gracefully and offers noticeable detail at this stage. Deep garnet in color, its dried wild black and blue berry fruit is complemented by umami-like wafts of shiitake, steak sauce and aniseed. The full-bodied palate is softening and fresh, with a generous core of juicy fruit, heightened complexity from savory notes of maturity and a singular, umami-and-berry finish. It's drinking wonderfully, although it's not quite at its peak.

Clive Pursehouse - Decanter

Wildly floral, this Merlot-based blend from 10 years ago still aromatically puts on quite the fireworks. Far from fatigued, this wine feels like it's just getting warmed up. Dried violets and cherry kirsch notes balance ripe aromas with mineral graphite tones. The palate shows balsamic and strawberries, fennel, leather and mint. The wine remains exceptionally structured a decade later.

Another huge wine, the 2013 La Muse is endowed with serious power and overall structure, especially compared to the 2012 tasted alongside it. Sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, cedar and smoke add considerable nuance. There is plenty of fruit and overall richness, but the imposing tannic heft is going to demand considerable cellaring. Points: 93-96

Antonio Galloni MW - Vinous

The 2013 La Muse is wonderfully vivid and expressive from the outset, especially in the aromatics. Graphite, smoke, lavender, menthol and licorice are all super-expressive. Those notes carry through to the palate, where the wine is dense, powerful and bursting at the seams with energy. Hints of mocha, chocolate, spice and leather add the final shades of nuance. Today, La Muse is the most expressive of Vérité's 2013s, with plenty of floral and savory notes that add complexity to the super-rich dark fruit. I tasted the 2013 from tank just prior to bottling. Points: 92-95
