The 2013 Montlandrie offers impressive fruit concentration on the nose with raspberry coulis and crushed strawberry, although maybe it does not quite own the same delineation as the 2013 Les Cruzelles at this stage. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannin, gently gripping the mouth, leading into a cedar-tinged, quite assertive finish that suggests another couple of years in bottle will do this Côtes de Castillon no harm at all.

Deep black and red currant notes mixed with white chalk and foresty notes are followed by a fruity, ripe, medium-bodied wine that is well-made and ideal for drinking over the next 5-7 years. From the famous proprietor of one of the reference point Pomerols, L’Eglise Clinet, proprietor Denis Durantou has turned out a very good wine from the limestone soils of the Castillon.

Open and easy, with a mix of cherry and pomegranate notes and a lightly crunchy, floral-tinged finish. —J.M.

5% Cabernet Sauvignon added to the Merlot-Cabernet Franc blend this year. Oak apparent making it a touch awkward but depth of fruit behind. 16/20

(75 Merlot, 20 Cabernet Franc, 5 Cabernet Sauvignon) 50% new oak, 18000 bottles. Much drier and more stemmy and raw than the rest of the Durantou wines. Lacking true juiciness. Too earthy, sour and black. 15/20
