Product Highlights
One of Australia's greatest Cabernet blends has an impossible job every. Single. Vintage. It has to follow itself.
After the extraordinary 2023 release, you know the pressure was on for the new 2024 Diana Madeline. So then, how do you follow up one of the greatest releases of one of Australia's greatest Cabernet blends?
Well... apparently like this.
98, 97, 96, 95, 95
The big scores are falling like it's The Matrix. And we're only just getting started.
That's the thing with Diana Madeline.
Great vintages don't happen by chance.
The vines have been in the ground since 1971, planted on ancient gravelly granite soils that have become one of Margaret River's great vineyards. Every block is farmed biodynamically, giving the vines remarkable resilience in difficult vintages, while every parcel is hand-picked across six separate passes to make sure the fruit is picked at perfect ripeness before wild fermentation and just over a year in French oak.
Even the final harvest was timed to a Moon opposite Saturn fruit day.
Whether you're a believer in biodynamics or not, it's hard to argue with that kind of consistency. Cullen has been at the top of its game for more than 50 years now.
In late September 2023, the rain in Margaret River switched off like a tap, and it stayed off until May. It was the hottest, driest and earliest harvest on record, and Cullen's biodynamic, dry-grown vines in Wilyabrup sailed through it.
The team picked over six passes timed to the lunar calendar, then fermented part of the wine in clay amphorae before 14 months in French oak. The result is a plush, deeply concentrated Diana Madeline: cassis, blackberry, sweet tobacco and dark chocolate, kept honest by bay leaf and finely milled tannins. Open it for the dinner you've been saving a bottle for, with a rare-cooked fillet, the good glasses and nobody in a hurry. Better still, buy two: one to drink now, and one to see what the next twenty years do to it.
