Tasting Notes

Deep, rich and complex, with aromas of blackberry, dark plum and black cherry layered with savoury spice, earth and subtle mocha. The full-bodied palate is generous and concentrated, balanced by fine, structured tannins and vibrant acidity, leading to a long, smooth and persistent finish.

Product Highlights

The Heir was created as the estate’s best Shiraz vines came of age, and 2016 was the vintage to show what they could do. Winepilot called it one of the really great vintages for the region and scored this wine 96 points. Campbell Mattinson, tasting it a decade on, found blackberry, roasted plum, coffee and earth unfolding into savoury, saltbush complexity, and noted how attractively it has developed.

That is the other gift here: time. This 2016 arrives with around a decade of bottle age already behind it. Mocha, blackberry, chocolate, bay leaf and graphite sit on a plush, sleek palate, with beautifully integrated oak, silky tannins and impressive length.

The vineyard sits in the south-western corner of the Vale, barely two kilometres from Gulf St Vincent. Afternoon sea breezes make it one of the coolest sites in McLaren Vale, and it is planted only to Shiraz and Cabernet, the two varieties that suit it best.

Audacious, as any musketeer should be, with the waiting already done and the legs to keep going until 2040.
