Product Highlights
Elena Brooks makes this Shiraz the old way, from very old vines. Many in the Barossa vineyard are over 100 years old, and some still stand on their original rootstock. She hand-picks and sorts every bunch, then ferments with wild yeast in open-top vats. The wine is basket-pressed into French and American oak.
Elena left Bulgaria to study winemaking in Australia. She was part of the team behind a Jimmy Watson Trophy-winning Shiraz. She and her husband Zar started Heirloom to bottle their best fruit and keep old vineyards alive.
2022 gave her plenty to work with. A wet winter led into a mild, steady summer with few heat spikes. The fruit ripened slowly and kept its natural acidity. You taste it in the glass: plum, blackberry, dark chocolate and mocha, with enough freshness to stop it feeling heavy. Ken Gargett summed it up as “Flavour by the truckload.”
Three critics landed on 94 points, and it took Gold at the 2024 Global Syrah Masters. Its big sibling, A’Lambra, was named a Syrah Master at the same show. That tells you how good the Brooks’ 2022 fruit was.
Gargett gives it eight to twelve years. Open one on a cold weekend, and put a few away for the winters after.
