Good, not quite up to 2019 though
"Well made from a very good vintage, just not quite the full body of the 2019 vintage, Cheaper elsewhere too."
Most Shiraz is released young and left for you to cellar. This one was held back first. Its maker gives this prestige release more time in its own cellar than most, and that patience shows.
The fruit comes mainly from a dry-grown vineyard in Blewitt Springs, with vines around 65 years old. It then spent around 18 months in a mix of new and older French oak. And it’s from 2021, a long, mild season that critics have lauded across South Australia.
In the glass it’s deep maroon, with cassis, blueberry, plum and violets. Mocha, liquorice and a wisp of woodsmoke sit underneath. The palate is supple and velvety, with the oak tucked neatly away and the tannins fine and silky. Campbell Mattinson called it immaculate, adding that “every nuance here is pitch perfect”.
At The Wine Collective, we’d save it for a cold winter night when the occasion deserves the good glasses. It sits at the top of its maker’s Shiraz range. The label stays off this page as part of our deal with the winery.
Five years in, it’s drinking beautifully, and Winepilot gives it at least another decade.
