The name Dog Point dates back to the earliest European settlement of Marlborough and the introduction of sheep to the district. These were the days when, due to a lack of fences, boundary riders used boundary-keeping dogs to protect the local flocks of sheep. The winery is a partnership between Ivan and Margaret Sutherland and James and Wendy Healey.

Fruit for their wines is sourced from selected vineyard plantings dating back to the early 1980s. These older well-established vines situated on free-draining silty clay loams are supplemented with fruit from closely planted hillside vines on soils with a clay loam influence. The vines enjoy consistent sunshine, low rainfall and cool nights that enable enormous flavour progression. In every bottle of Dog Point Vineyard Wine is impeccable attention to detail and a thoughtful hands-on approach.
This focus is expertly partnered with a low interventionist ethos. Fruit is hand-picked from low-cropped, estate-grown vines, then hand-crafted with great care to produce fine wines that are accessible and enjoyable with cellaring potential. The winemaking team consists of Murray Cook and Matthew Sutherland under the guidance of James and Ivan. The Dog Point range includes the varieties that thrive in the region, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir as well as Chardonnay.
