Pierro Reserve Cabernet Merlot 2022

Cabernet sauvignon and merlot make up the bulk of the blend, but smaller components of petit verdot, cabernet franc, and malbec play important roles in completing the seamlessness and smooth integration that marks this wine. It is a wine of seamless elegance and real refinement, with opulent, fleshy fruit showing richness and presence. Already displaying complexity, but with the potential for further cellaring.

Although it’s had a few years to settle, this is still somewhat nervy, bristling with acidity yet remaining rather buoyant. There’s plenty of enjoyment within, the cassis and currants, mulberries and raspberries, dried flowers, spices and menthol. The palate cinched with puckering if textural tannins, and the finish does linger. Get the right food match to see this at its best.

The 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve leads with dried mint and cassis bramble, licorice, dark chocolate and a weightier fruit profile than the LTCf tasted alongside. This is light and supple, with dried rose petals and a rising finish, akin to clove/star/mint leaf. This is a delicate iteration of Cabernet Sauvignon. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This vintage was a good year for Margaret River reds, though I often think about 2023 while I’m tasting them. Red fruit and cherry, dried herb, a fair amount of nutmeg and cedar oak, some mint and dried flowers. It’s medium-bodied, quite nutty and savoury, an earthy dark tobacco character here in with slightly baked red fruits, tannin is perhaps a little drying, and the finish pulls fresh with balanced acidity, and good length, with something like pastrami in the aftertaste. It’s a good wine, but not one of the better Pierro Reserves.
