A bold and fuller chardonnay with distinct varietal character and some oomph from spicy, woody elements, toasty and honeyed notes, the lilt of vanilla and some distinct peach, nectarine and green apple characters. In this popcorn, a touch of toffee apple, but the cool, lithe core of briny minerality and general pink grapefruit sizzle that sits within oak and fruit does a terrific job of balance and character. A charismatic thing in the glass.

The 2025 G1-10 Chardonnay is mealy, nutty, complex and highly attractive. The wine shows impressive mid-palate restraint—the region can produce flavor without worries, but it often lacks the restraint and poise of its more southerly neighbor, Margaret River. And here, we see everything that is good about Chardonnay. It is spicy, the phenolics create effortless texture and support on the palate, while the finish is long. This is an excellent wine. It has a lemony, succulent finish. 13% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

There's power and intensity here from this Ferguson Valley wine, but it delivers it with such restraint and elegance. After hand-picking, it was whole bunch pressed into a mix of new and one-year-old French oak for fermentation. I think this wine is showing more restraint than some of the earlier vintages, in line with how it's evolved in recent years. And as a result, the wine shows impeccable balance and focused precision. The creamy oak is certainly supportive, but the crisp melony citrus fruit with its very subtle stone fruit nuances is quite compelling. An excellent example of the style.
