Standish The Relic Shiraz Viognier 2024

The Rhône lover's Standish. Co-fermented with a touch of Viognier, this is the most aromatic wine in the range. Rose petals, violets and cherry blossom pour from the glass, but underneath all that fragrance is still the deep, concentrated Barossa fruit that makes Standish what it is. A lot of people call Lamella their favourite. The Relic tends to have its own fan club.

Tasting Notes

The Relic opens with a rush of cracked pepper, dark berries, smoked meat, sea spray and black liquorice. The Viognier works quietly in the background, adding florals and a gentle aromatic glow. On the palate, it is plush, deeply flavoured and full of movement. Dark plum, blackberry, exotic spice and savoury charcuterie notes roll through firm but polished tannins. Powerful, but never clumsy. A wine of spice, tension and serious length.

Product Highlights

"This is very fine in its shape and monumentally powerful... very impressive."
98 Points | Erin Larkin, Robert Parker Wine Advocate

The Relic has always occupied a slightly different place in the Standish lineup. While the other wines are big, broad Barossa Shiraz, The Relic looks north to the Rhône Valley for inspiration.

Co-fermented with a small amount of Viognier, just 2% in 2024, it’s the aromatics that hit you first. Cherry blossom, rose petals, violets, cranberry and pomegranate all rise from the glass before the darker Shiraz fruit starts to reveal itself underneath.

It's fragrant. It's lifted. And it's unlike almost anything else being made in the Barossa. That's the magic of The Relic. The Viognier doesn't make the wine lighter. It makes it more expressive, more detailed, more aromatic. A wine that’s monumentally powerful and remarkably elegant at the same time. As Erin Larkin noted, freshness abounds here. The tannins are silky, the finish long, and the shape of the wine feels incredibly refined.

For many collectors, The Relic is the most distinctive wine in the range.

Not because it's trying to be different.

Because it just is.
