Tony Love - Winepilot

Adelaide Hills Chardonnay designed as a more refreshing angle to the variety, unoaked to allow an all-fruit style, tangy, sub-tropical, apple and lemon with subtle ferrous threads providing a minerally feel in the palate. No need for any serious Chardonnay navel gazing here – this is all about easy-going drinkability for all occasions.

Unoaked Chardonnay had its moment in the sun a couple of decades ago but, when done well, remains a legitimate and enjoyable style. Estate fruit only, production of this wine is 694 cases. Pale straw/yellow in colour, the wine has pleasing aromatics with stone fruits, a touch of the tropicals, peaches, figs and mango. A delightful summer drinking style with good energy from zippy acidity. There is an ever-so-slightly crunchy texture, and the wine is of medium length. It will provide thoroughly enjoyable drinking over the next two to three years.

I will first draw your attention to the price tag of sub $25, the second to the reputation of the Adelaide Hills and their Chardonnay affiliation. Next I’ll say this is a powdery and perfumed number with talc and fresh linen, yellow grapefruit and lemon tea. A wealth of drawling natural acidity and some supportive use of creamy oak. Almond flour and the oatmeal creaminess plays nicely to the finish. If you are after a moderately oaked and citrus fruited Chardonnay for everyday enjoyment, this is a ripper. Drink now with bread sticks in hummus.

This is a straightforward white wine. Crunchy in texture, lightly flavoured and a little mute in perfume, but with indicators pointing neatly to chardonnay – gentle, sweet stone fruit notes, lemony tang, crisp green apple juice in perfume and palate. In taste, it's a little skittish and cloying at once, watery in consistency and finishes short. Yes, a cold glass should go OK.
