Massolino Barolo Parafada 2022

An exuberant nose of cherries, crushed pomegranate and flowers, as well as aromatic wood, tea and hibiscus. The medium- to full-bodied palate is long, elegant and transparent, with integrated, polished, silky tannins and a delicate finish. Approachable, enveloping and very pleasant.

The Massolino 2022 Barolo Parafada comes from the oldest vineyard owned by the family, purchased in 1957 and now home to vines that are 65 to 70 years old. The wine is richly textured with a soft, almost creamy edge that complements the power and structure that define Serralunga d'Alba. Aromas of Amarena cherry and blood orange lend the warm 2022 vintage a gently sweet profile without ever crossing into over-ripeness. The wine gathers momentum across the palate, where firm tannins and pronounced drive bring focus and length. Just 3,330 bottles were produced.

Tasted at the winery in May and just now at home. I liked it just a little better today with either a + sign or a plus one point. Vines are around 70 years of age with deep roots. Darker fruit, cherry, spice, cut fennel, rosy too. Medium-bodied, a little nutty, a ferrous grip to open-weave grainy tannin, a juiciness too, cherry pip, a smattering of dried herbs and tobacco, an almond friand richness, crisp acidity, with a tight finish of very good length. In the more recent tasting I note a sense of ‘minerality’ and more substance on the mid-palate. Excellent. Just over the line for 95 points.

Antonio Galloni MW - Vinous

The 2022 Barolo Parafada is a sensual, open-knit wine. Sweet red cherry, cedar, pipe tobacco and mint open with some coaxing. The Parafada is distinguished by its soft contours and exceptional balance within the context of the year. Older vines confer notable breadth, which builds through to the expansive, resonant finish.
