Mystery pinot
"This was a very enjoyable food wine especially with pizza. Yes it did remind me of berries etc but it was just so drinkable from beginning to end."
Finding Tasmanian Pinot Noir at this price is rare. Finding one this good is the bit that made us stop mid-taste.
This Mystery Pinot comes from Piper’s River in Tasmania’s north-east, one of Australia’s most respected cool-climate regions. It is the home of some very serious names, and it has a reputation for producing Pinot Noir with elegance, fine structure and real finesse.
It is also one of the most expensive places in Australia to grow grapes. That is why Tassie Pinot usually comes with a much higher price tag.
So when a Pinot from Piper’s River lands at this price, with this much charm, freshness and drinkability, it is worth paying attention.
Campbell Mattinson gave it 94 points, but the real kicker was his note that he tasted it alongside a Pinot costing twice as much and still preferred this wine. That is not faint praise. That is the kind of endorsement that makes a smart buy feel even smarter.
Expect the cool-climate Pinot goods - red fruit, gentle spice, silky texture and that lovely Tasmanian lift. Elegant enough to impress, easy enough to pour without overthinking it.
If you love Pinot Noir, especially the bright, finely built Tassie style, this is one of those rare under-$20 finds that feels like it slipped through the cracks in the best possible way.
