The synergy between McLaren Vale and this grape variety is clear. Even in a more torrid vintage it keeps its form. Lemon pulp, white nectarine, white flowers, green banana and a little mint. It has a sappy sort of crunch to it, perhaps a little more waxy this vintage, but still fresh and lively, a lightly pulpy lemon pith bitterness, but also perfumed with it, and the length is good, closing stony and tight. Saline and delicious.

A straight bat on making here, as usual, with a cool tank ferment using cultured yeast. Picpoul (or piquepoul, if you prefer) is becoming McLaren Vale’s answer to riesling. Well, almost. It has the same vibrancy and brisk appeal in a warmer climate, if somewhat less aromatic. That’s no loss, though.
