From one of Margaret River’s great chardonnay producers, this is yet another brilliant example of the style that has made Pierro so admired. You wouldn’t guess it came from a warm year—it’s delicate and fine, with a pristine brightness. The nose shows light grapefruit, citrus, a touch of butterscotch, and a subtle mealy note in the background. The palate has real zing, with lively, pristine acidity driving through to a sustained finish. A chalky, minerally edge adds to the linear feel and precision. Another outstanding Pierro chardonnay.

Pierro of the Peterkin clan. On opening, I hovered around a bit of a ‘damn, this is good, but hasn’t hit the heights’ and then I got distracted by a phone call, and some other work related matters, and perhaps some fairy dust blew in through the shimmer of billowy curtains in my breezy open window, and the wine in bottle, and glass, found the heights, indeed. Tick, tock, tick, tock. Decant. Sumptuous chardonnay of chiseled edges, briny minerality, judicious nougat and sandalwood oak seasoning, the undercurrent of concentrated, just ripe nectarine, a squelchy of green pineapple and some slickness from toffee apple going on. Also, just a suggestion of white mushroom, a pleasing kinda savoury note through the palate. Density, persistence, almost palate staining in a way, with a freshness, just so, balancing out the generosity. Not the most turbo-charged release, perhaps an epoch of more restraint within the Pierro oeuvre. Class act, is the byline.

This is distinctly Pierro, and it’s delicious. Creamy, nutty lees, the richness from mostly mlf and cedary sweet, spiced oak. Full bodied, with almond croissant, stone fruit and grapefruit, ginger and honeycomb coming together well, and the acidity keeping everything rather tidy.

The Pierro Chardonnay is one of the great wines of Australia, and its release each year is always eagerly anticipated. I like the consistency of the wine, in that it has always been true to its site and maker. Here, the 2024 Chardonnay is nutty, concentrated and fresh, with loads of fruit personality from the warm, dry season. There are notes of roasted cashews, ripe yellow peach, pink grapefruit and fennel. The impact of malolactic fermentation on the palate is more pronounced than in previous years, to my memory, but it fits hand in glove with the almond meal, nuts, spices and rich fruit profile. This is a superb wine. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
