Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front

Margaret River semillon, fermented wild and served unfined and unfiltered, among other things. I like this rather a lot. It’s got lots going on and yet it’s not tiresome. Indeed it’s deliciously drinkable. Citrus, wax, sprays of herbs, gravel and a whisper of honeysuckle. It’s a wine of feel, flavour and zip. It’s worth every cent.

The 2024 Blanc is 100% Semillon. It leads with grass and wax, wet concrete and ocean air, white flowers and brine. In the mouth, the wine is lean and grassy, with plenty of texture and acid to keep things on track. This is a lovely wine, breezy and fresh but complex as well. 12.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

It’s semillon. It’s fermented wild. It’s good. It’s full of hay and dried lemon peel, some dried oregano and honeycomb. Dabs of lemon and persimmon, so it’s very dry on the palate, with lively acidity and a little phenolic pull to the finish.
