2024 Mystery Margaret River Chardonnay Deal No. 6081
"3 stars"
If someone asked, “Who is the Margaret River producer I should be keeping an eye on?” it would be this one. Well, this family, to put it more succinctly.
For those in the know and chasing Chardonnay nirvana - that mix of modern precision and traditional craft - this surname has long been at the top of the WA phone book.
It has built a cult-like following, with bottlings usually running into the hundreds and total case production barely stretching into three digits.
Close-planted, low-yielding fruit.
A dress-circle Wilyabrup vineyard.
Regal oak.
And a winemaking signature that has become almost mythical over the years.
This is barrel fermented, wild yeast and single-vineyard, from the heart of Wilyabrup.
There’s that inflection of winemaker spirit too - the struck match and gunflint nuance - adding an element of complexity that rivals some of the best proprietors of the style.
Power, restraint, concentration, expensive oak, insane length. Everything is dialled in. Everything is right where it needs to be.
And it’s not just us getting carried away. Three separate 96-point scores, plus a 95 from Ray Jordan, is not something you casually stumble into. Especially for a mystery wine.
At full price, this already had credibility.
AT this price, it becomes the sort of Chardonnay people start adding extra bottles of before they even finish reading the reviews.
